Fivespot Cabin

Loving California after a 17-year stint in NYC. Husband Bachrun is an artist (his work and sensibility defines fivespot and Merrynook). I'm at work facilitating contemporary art events at the HATCHERY, an abandoned commune site near our home.

Fivespot is just 15 minutes to Kings Canyon - Sequoia National Park in California's spectacular Sierra Nevada. Giant sequoia trees, jaw-dropping Kings Canyon, High Sierra hikes: all yours without the crowds you'd find in Yosemite. The cabin: cute, homey, comfortable, wi-fi, classic book collection, fireplace, sauna, artful tilework, outdoor shower, covered patio, hummingbird feeders, fresh flowers, a quirky, international knick-knack collection, full kitchen, BBQ, laundry. Built in the 1940s, it was completely renovated in 2008. Although fivespot is most definitely a mountain retreat - it's one hour to the nearest grocery store, one-half hour to the nearest gas station - you won't be alone. We can give advice on the best Park trails and experiences, and we lived in New York City for many years and know how valuable it is to tap into local expertise, so you can get the most out of your vacation. Great for couples, small families, and intimate friends, Bachrun and Mahalia have created a home away from home, for fun and comfort in the mountains, while offering the necessary amenities of city living (but not including a television). Pinehurst was a flourishing logging community for decades. Pinehurst Lodge, a short walk from fivespot, is a locally-owned and operated restaurant in a 100-year-old sawmill. It continues to be a hub of activity for locals and visitors alike. Other nearby historical logging sites are Neff's Camp and Millwood. Also a summer vacation destination, Pinehurst attracts San Joaquin Valley residents who take advantage of cooler forest temperatures to get relief from the brutally hot Valley summers. Cedarbrook, an early-20th century cabin community built by Mennonite families from nearby Reedley around a lovely year-round stream, is a 10-minute walk from fivespot. Today, small cabins used as summer homes, rentals, and by full-time residents, are scattered throughout the forest. Pinehurst's year-round population is around 350.
