A town that crawls deep into your soul. Where neighbors are still friends. Where the community looks after each other. A place where you can hear your own heartbeat, but also the heart of centuries ago. Philippolis is rich in Karoo vegetation, an interesting wildlife and also a birds from a paradise.
Philippolis was the first settlement in the Free State (1823). It also served as the capital of the Griquas and up to today you can still see the Griqua influence in Philippolis. The special Karoo houses, of which several have been declared as national heritage-worthy, present a calling to the colorful past in memory.
If you speed through the Karoo at 120km per hour, the landscape is drab and featureless. Or so it would seem. There is a road (the R717) that takes you straight to a small town in the southern Free State. When traveling southwards, take the route at Trompsburg that is 7km shorter than the N1, and take the turn-off at Colesberg when you travel northwards. Reduce Speed. Be on the lookout for the secretary-bird, black eagle, at night the porcupine and maned jackal, the white and common springbuck.
