Plonked in the middle of the River Tagus, this dreamy castle appears unchanged from its 12th-century beginnings. Built on Roman foundations, its fortified walls guard tales of myth and legend – and are said to harbour the ghost of a lovesick princess. Regular ferries leave from Constância and Tancos to the island.
