The ryokan is located in a geothermal area, with a number of hot springs nearby for guests to relax in. This was our fourth trip to Japan and we've stayed in many ryokans. This is one of our favorites. The space we stayed at was huge. It was a two-story stand alone building. The seats looked out onto the courtyard with a pond and a lot of trees, which was very peaceful. I'm usually not the type to stay in my hotel/ryokan all day, but this place tempted me to do so due to the serenity of the courtyard. There were two private onsen that were easy to access due to the small number of guests that stay here. The food was fabulous. While walking around one morning I found a hiking trail that led up to castle ruins. The next morning I hiked up to the ruins and down the other side and came out near the Moss Land.

Set just 24 km from Lake Shinji, Saginoyusou offers accommodation in Yasugi with access to an open-air bath, a garden, as well as luggage storage space. It is located 27 km from Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum and provides room service. The ryokan has parking on-site, a hot spring bath and a 24-hour front desk. We were so looked after from the moment we arrived to when we departed. We chose to stay here to have our last night in Japan to be in the most extraordinary setting and to have access to the Adachi Museum. The room was stunningly beautiful, comfortable and we loved the private onsen. The amenities provided were great too. All of our meals, dinner and breakfast, were a delight to the taste buds as well as visually pleasing.

Set 1.7 km from Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum, Onyado Nono Matsue Natural Hot Spring offers 4-star accommodation in Matsue and has a spa and wellness centre. Offering a restaurant, the property also has a bar, as well as a sauna and a hot spring bath. Private parking is available on site. Wonderful, spacious, clean, and comfortable hotel room. I was lucky enough to upgrade to a King room at check-in, and it was perfect. The hotel is within easy walking distance to city sights and the main train station with lots of good restaurants nearby. The evening ramen was great and there were hot drinks available as well. A few convenience stores are close by too. You leave your shoes in lockers near reception as the hotel has tatami floors. It was very cold in Matsue when I was there (lots of snow) but the room was nice and warm.

Located within 6 km of Masakigaoka Park and 6.1 km of Hamayama Park, Dormy Inn Izumo offers rooms in Izumo. This 3-star hotel offers a 24-hour front desk and luggage storage space. The accommodation provides a sauna, hot spring bath, restaurant and free WiFi throughout the property. It was close to Izumo station. The onsen spa area was wonderful. Extra amenities such as popsicles, yogurt and ramen and free washing machine made our trip easy and convenient. The rooms were spacious and also included pajamas and various toiletries. The staff were friendly and helpful. Easy to store luggage before or after checkout!

The nearest airport is Yonago Airport, 22 km from the property. Fantastic! Little towns like this will often have old-skool ryokans and cheaper alternatives (minshuku, hostels) that aren't nearly as good. This place is the perfect, more reasonably-priced, alternative to the big ol' ryokans. Was expecting a minshuku-looking place but, no, from the very first impression this was a lovely, big, beautiful place with a cool vibe. The staff were very sweet, the bath was small but much nicer than you'd expect for the price and the room was very spacioius indeed. Breakfast was dead good and the older gentelman who played the shamisen and told us tales of the area was lovely. Would 100% stay here again.
