Debrecen is a wonderful city to visit and live in.
Debrecen is a wonderful city to visit and live in. It has a charming mix of history, culture, and modern life. The city center is very walkable, with beautiful squares, cozy cafés, and the impressive Great Reformed Church as a landmark. Public transport is easy to use, and the tram line makes getting around the city straightforward. What makes Debrecen especially nice is its relaxed atmosphere compared to Budapest — it feels calm and welcoming, yet still lively with students and young people thanks to the University of Debrecen. The university itself and the surrounding park are absolutely worth a visit. For nature lovers, the Nagyerdő (Great Forest) area is perfect for walks, cycling, or just relaxing. There are also thermal baths and wellness options that make the city feel both vibrant and restful. Overall, Debrecen is a clean, friendly, and affordable city with plenty to see and do without the rush of a capital. This is a gem of a city. We love the pools at Aquarius, the zoo, and all the other places to go and see. Downtown has some pleasant areas and is easy to get around. A small, sleepy town, whose biggest "attraction" are the once famous thermal baths. Don't be fooled! This thing may have impressed party dignitaries in 1971, but today it is just a large, empty, sad, neglected and outdated place with almost no people and almost everything closed. Just a few pools of hot, tea-colored water and that's all. It's not worth it. It's better to eat goulash in one of the local restaurants on the main promenade (very tasty) and continue on your way. The bath was alright, but a few things were a bit unarranged. E.g., hiring chairs. The main checkout didn't know how many chairs were in stock, and they were still selling chairs (for HUF 800 each) while they had none inside. The hotel's location is famous for 2 additional options: M3 Outlet Shopping Center vis-a-vis the hotel and Archaeopark Polgar - recreated small village about land life ~ 800 years ago. The former is open/closed based on COVID restrictions, the latter is closed down for several years now. Beside the latter there is an interesting wood arch bridge (you can see it from the highway) on which you can walk over to another wide meadow field on the other side of the country road - good for a 45 min hike.Guest review byChrisGermany - 10

This town is a must see! Wonderful museums (Agora, Modem, Déri), hidden gem cafes (Vintage World), thermal water (Aquaticum), concerts and other shows at the Kölcsey Cultural center, a walk in the Big Forest near the University or in the historic town center with amazing architecture and the emblematic Great Church. Nyiregyhaza is a very nice 100K citizens Hungarian city. It's very clean, you can see that it's been taken good care of. Nice parks, sculptures, a mixture of cultures, great places to hang out or to go out for a portion of great food and drinks. It's also a university city and has a great zoo on the outskirts of the city. I'd say that it's also climatically and geographically situated perfectly well - just 2+hrs from Budapest (by highway), the nearest airport is in Debrecen which is some 80 km from Nyiregyhaza, neighbouring Ukraine and Slovakia (literally an hour's drive to each of the above mentioned), Tisa river is near, lots of water and forests. That's a small city, therefore not so many attractions besides the spa. Speaking of spa, there are two separate ones: - closer to the center there is the one with medicinal thermal water - in the autumn being mainly populated by pensioners - the aqua park is the second one - that's quite big, but I don't see as being well designed - if it's about the aqua park, I like better the one in Mako If it's about restaurants - there is a nice one at Hotel/Restaurant Nelson. Vibrant town in Eastern Hungary, with long history, and modern vibe. Worth visiting for the main sights: the "big church" and the "big forest", Déri museum and the Zoo, but also for the nightlife and the cafés and restaurants. Easy access by train, plane and motorway, and a peaceful yet vibrant inner city with a nice pedestrian quarter. Good shopping in two plazas and some shopping centers outside of the city. There is also a theatre, the university with events going on, a health spa and aquatic wellness center and even a puppet theatre for the kids!
