The property was beautiful, unique and so very comfortable. The staff and Luca the manager were ABOVE AND BEYOND helpful, knowledgeable and kind. Truly all the staff treated me as if I was family as I saw with all the guests. This place is one of the best places I have ever stayed in Italy and elsewhere. If I had known i would have spent a few more days. Will definitely be returning. Location great.

Great location close to old part of town. New modern rooms. Used their garage for parking as there were few areas on road that were free. Also paid for breakfast that was provided. Stayed for nine nights. Comfortable room. Had our own patio on the first floor

Il Borghetto was a perfect choice for visiting Tropea. Only a few kilometers out of Tropea town (and a hotel shuttle can drop you in town and pick you up for a nominal charge, saving the need for a taxi - which are a rarity in Tropea) the hotel had beautiful grounds and a wonderful pool that was large and ultra clean. A small bar beside the pool could provide snacks and drinks, and there are plenty of umbrellas available to sit under. One of the best things about Il Borghetto is the staff, with Eleanore, Frederika, Manuel, Massimo and so many others making you really feel like part of the family. The hotel picked us up from the train station and dropped us off again when our stay was over. The fresh breakfast in the morning was something you looked forward to the day before . Tasty and homemade food was a delight. I would stay again without hesitation. We even arranged a massage at the hotel for my wife and I and Vera. the masseuse was an expert at her job! All in all a wonderful Tropean stay.

FAQs about hotels in Calabria

Italy’s Best-Kept Secret

Boasting fantastic beach resorts on its 2 coastlines, Calabria forms the toe of the Italian boot. A favourite of Italian holidaymakers, it is in many respects the region that Italy doesn’t want you to know about.

With some of Booking.com’s best Calabria hotels, Tropea has a fabulous beach at the foot of sheer cliffs topped by buildings. Neighbouring Capo Vaticano has beautiful beaches and a craggy coastline, and Scilla is another amazing Tyrhennian coast resort, immortalised in Greek mythology.

Gioia Tauro has an important port, as does Reggio Calabria, the region’s largest city and birthplace of Gianni Versace. It has an excellent archaeological museum housing the Riace bronzes – Greek statues from the 5th century BC. Just north at Villa San Giovanni, trains drive straight onto ferries to Messina in Sicily.

Inland is Aspromonte National Park, one of Calabria’s top tourist sights, while the Pollino National Park is in the north. Its nearest city is Cosenza with a tranquil old town and 13th-century castle. South is Lamezia Terme, site of the region’s main airport, and nearby Catanzaro is the Calabrian capital.

Crotone on the Ionian coast has a long, sandy beach, as does Soverato. Roccella Ionica’s beach is overlooked by a 16th-century castle, and inland Gerace is one of Italy’s best preserved medieval villages.

An interesting, unique city with its own atmosphere.

An interesting, unique city with its own atmosphere. It boasts a large and comfortable promenade for strolling, offering stunning views of the strait and the volcano. It also boasts a long, intriguing pedestrian street with shops, historic architecture, and cultural attractions. The museums are fascinating and quite informative. I highly recommend visiting the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, Palazzo della Cultura "Pasquino Crupi," Museo Diocesano "Monsignor Aurelio Sorrentino," Pinacoteca, and the unique and wonderful Museo Nazionale del Bergamotto. It boasts many interesting streets, a spacious promenade, and a green and welcoming city. There are also numerous pleasant and comfortable establishments where you can sample delicious, authentic Calabrian cuisine.

It is a very picturesque town, and it is easy to visit the top spots. Take a slow walk down the cliff from the town to the beach. The sand is fine and the water is a clear blue. Go up to the monastery and take photos of the coast. Just spend some time walking down the narrow streets and alleyways. We went in the offseason and didn't get a chance to visit Stromboli, the volcanic island. That should be a highlight and something we will do next time.

This was my second one-day visit to Cosenza, and I still haven't had time to fully explore. However, both the historic part and the modern centre are extensive, so are worth more time. I haven't yet explored beyond the old town for restaurants, but there is a good trattoria with friendly service next to the cathedral. (Calabria Bella)

Rende, which is really a part of the long thin city of Cosenza, is not a pretty place. Cosenza, as I have said many times before, suffers from large amounts of rubbish strewn everywhere, from paper, bottles and cans, to broken baby carriages, old bicycles, broken glass and split-open rubbish sacks containing.....(I'll leave it to your imagination!). The best thing to do, and my tactics always, is to find a nice hotel or lodging and then stay in it till it's time to leave tomorrow after breakfast.

A beautiful ancient town in Calabria with an ancient atmosphere, wonderful views of the sea, Stromboli and the sunset and not yet so affected by tourism. Right in the town a small but sufficient and beautiful beach, the best swimming far and wide. Excellent accessibility by train from Lamezia or Tropea (.... unless there is a strike or other outage :-o) Tartufo and ice cream at Gelateria Morino are not to be missed!! Very beautiful and refreshing are the two functional fountains in the city center.

We loved the choice of beaches and the crystal clear sea, we could see fish swimming within touching distance of us. When its really hot, there is plenty of shady beach areas if wanted. The old town was amazing to see from the beach underneath, the way its been built on the cliff. Good choice of restaurants and bars.
