FAQs about hotels in Lago Maggiore - Italy
A Breath of Fresh Air
Italy’s longest lake, Lake Maggiore lies at the foot of the southern Alps and extends into Switzerland in the north. Most of the Lake Maggiore hotels in Switzerland are in Locarno and neighbouring Ascona. Surrounded by vineyards, Locarno houses a 12th-century castle and an innovative representation of the solar system which extends as far as Tegna village.
Also in Swiss territory is Brissago, starting point for boat trips to the Brissago Islands whose botanical gardens grow coffee plants. Over the Italian border is beautiful Cannobio in Piedmont, where brightly coloured buildings overlook the small harbour.
South is Ghiffa, home to a UNESCO World Heritage-listed pilgrimage mountain. Just beyond is Verbania, a laidback city lining 2 of Maggiore Lake’s shores. Across the water, the largest of the Borromean Islands – Isola Bella – has a palace and stepped gardens offering wonderful lake views. Home to the largest concentration of Lake Maggiore hotels, Stresa is a lovely town and departure point for boat trips to these islands.
Near the lake’s southern tip is Arona, while less well-known Lake Maggiore resorts in Lombardy include Angera (known for wines and a medieval castle), sleepy Ranco, and Luino with its popular weekly market.
Booking.com has a fabulous range of apartments, B&Bs and hotels by Lake Maggiore covering all these resorts and more.

- Scored out of 10, guest rating 8.7Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 695 reviewsHotel Splendid is aptly named. A hotel full of old world charm and attentive staff that will ensure you have a pleasant stay. I was on a road trip travelling with friends and its location, reputation and the fact that it has secure underground car parking available was a deciding factor in its selection. Others have complained about the €19 extra charge for the car parking but it wasn't unexpected and it gave me peace of mind and a good night's sleep knowing my car was safe. Check in staff were warm and welcoming and the hotel itself exudes an old world charm. Hotel Splendid is one of the very few hotels in Baveno that is on the shore of Lake Maggiore with it's own private beach and dock for boats. The terrace outside is a perfect location to sit and have a drink whilst watching the world go by. The bedroom furnishings are in keeping with the grandeur of days gone by adding to the overall ambience of the hotel. The bedroom was large, well appointed and spotlessly clean - with temperatures outside hitting 34c during the day and 25c at night efficient air-conditioning was very welcome. Breakfast was very good - a self serve buffet with a big selection of meats, cheeses, croissants, fruit, pastries, cake and cereals. I especially liked the fresh honeycomb which is not often seen these day's. Evening meals and wines were superb with a varied selection on offer. Everything was cooked to perfection and served by attentive waiters and waitresses. Wanting to explore the palaces on nearby islands we took the hotels advice and booked a private water taxi. For €100 the water taxi picked us up at the hotel and transported 6 of us to the three islands we wanted to visit - dropping us off and returning to pick us up when we made the phone call. The skipper also made a good recommendation on where to take lunch on 'the restaurant island'. That the Hotel Splendid is only rated as a 4* hotel is a surprise - for me it deserves a 5* rating.Guest review byRogerUnited Kingdom
- Scored out of 10, guest rating 8.0Very good - What previous guests thought, 190 reviewsHad a excellent few days here and it was perfect for what we wanted. The reception staff were very friendly and helpful and really set a positive tone to start your stay. We stayed in a mobile home which perfect for what we needed and the porch area outside was great for sitting out in the evening. The on-site restaurant served great food at reasonable prices, we used it for two events and weren’t disappointed. The two beaches that are available for use by the lake were really nice. Offered easy access to the water for a swim and was a nice area to relax. The views from the beaches were beautiful and the water really clean. 20/25 minute walk from the main train station in Dormelletto and a bus stop right outside the camp. Trains go further north up to Stresa, bus goes to Arona but can get connections from there. Supermarket next to the camp as well. Are car could be useful but we didn’t need oneGuest review byStephenUnited Kingdom

Easy to underestimate Isola Bella when you get off the ferry...
Easy to underestimate Isola Bella when you get off the ferry and are assaulted by retail stands. But get past this as quickly as possible to visit the villa and especially the gardens. The restaurant Centrale (Food Family Love) in Stresa is quite nice. We ate there twice. The pumpkin soup is delicious. Do not go to the Cafe Bolongaro across from the navigation offices. High pressure to buy and the pastries were dry and flavorless, as were the beverages. Should have left immediately when they started putting things on plates when we walked in.Guest review byLindaUnited States - 10
Verbania is a really good base for a stay on Lake Maggiore.
Verbania is a really good base for a stay on Lake Maggiore. It has 2 parts - Intra where the main ports are, and Pallanza. There are lots of boats leaving and arriving every day at Intra, both passenger-only and ferries with cars, so very useful for exploring other parts of the lake. Intra has a nice sea front and an old town with little courtyards and cafes dotted all over it. The highlight of Pallanza is Villa Taranto, the botanic gardens. Well worth a visit.Guest review byLenoraUnited Kingdom - 10

I have been going to Cannobio for nearly thirty years it is a little gem on Lago Maggiore and is the essence if an Italian town. There are not many English or UK tourists, which makes it good to practise Italian. It sits on the lake with an amazing Sunday market and emits a feeling of comfort and home for me I should say its horrible to keep it a little secret but it is a great place to visit with amazing restaurants and good quality food with prices for all budgets and campsites tooGuest review byLouiseUnited Kingdom - 10
Baveno is a town of human scale.
Baveno is a town of human scale. It's position on the lake in the Borromean gulf means the it is very well connected with ferries. At the time I visited (September) Ferries run around the sights of the lake centre every half hour, and twice a week they run up to Locarno and Ascona in Switzerland (well worth a look. The lake navigation company don't advertise it but they do a week holiday pass which is good for unlimited journeys over the entire length of the lake for 95 Euro per week. If you are going to be getting around by ferry predominantly, this is outstanding value. For comparison, on Lake lucerne and Lake Geneva, the ferry company charge 90 Euros per day for an open pass. Baveno doesn't overplay the tourist card in terms or pricing. An espresso can be had for 1.30 Euro, a Cappucino for 2.50 Euro. The town is well served by Uber (who are more reliable than the local taxi firms I dealt with, and considerably lower cost). Don't miss the Borromeo islands (and Villas) or the botanical garden at Villa Taranto. If you have a head for heights try the bucket lift (Funivia) at Laveno for some great views over the lake. Look out also for Sunday Lunchtime music (chamber music or soft jazz generally) in towns around the lake and modern art exhibitions at Villa Giulia in Pallanza. An exhibition of work by Ugo Nespolo was incredibly good, and the ticket also gives access to Museo Paesaggio with some interesting bronzes and landscapes On the northern shores of the lake, Cannobio is a lovely little town, well worth a visit. and Cannero is a (better?) alternative to Luino on Market days. On the Swiss lakeshore, personally I prefer Ascona to Locarno, principally because of size and a more Italian vibe but both are worth visiting.Guest review byJohnUnited Kingdom - 10

Luino is quite a large town with lots of options for entertainment in the evenings, as well as access to the lake and its amenities. It is not overpopulated with tourists (we went in September) and still retains its own identity.Guest review byPeterUnited Kingdom - 10

Cannero Riviera is a quiet spot on the shores of Lake Maggiore in a perfect position for sightseeing trips around the lake , including into Switzerland, both by car and by boat. It is served by a very picturesque foot passenger ferry terminal. For such a small place there are plenty of eating options including restaurants, pizza places and gelateria but limited options for shopping. However that need not be a problem as there are great weekly markets at Connobio and Luino both of which can be reached from Cannero by ferry. Can thoroughly recommend a trip to Ascona in Switzerland and the Borromean islands just off Stresa as places to visitGuest review byCarolineUnited Kingdom - 6.0
A small place by the lake, but the shore is more or less...
A small place by the lake, but the shore is more or less private, so you are limited to the part of the shore that is in the camp, The place has many shops, which are more or less empty or already run down, also there is only one restaurant , which is open all day, but there is a lot of traffic. Also, there is a lot of garbage on the street. In general, you get the feeling that they had big plans for tourism, but they did not succeed.Guest review byBoštjanSlovenia - 10

Verbania Pallanza, especially its promenade is a great place to stay and visit Lago Maggiore. Great views over the lake and the mountains, lots of nice restaurants and bars, long promenade at the lake till Suna, less touristic than Stresa or Baveno.Guest review byDorotaBelgium
