The room was very nice, staff very helpful, breakfast was fantastic, and we were especially thankful that the hotel explained (in advance, by email) how to drive the the hotel, and then provided valet parking so our time negotiating tiny streets was kept to a minimum.

FAQs about hotels in Umbria

Hilltop Towns Ringing with Music

One of Italy’s smallest regions, fabulous Umbria has stunning hilltop towns, rolling vineyards and magnificent architecture to rival its more famous neighbour Tuscany.

The capital Perugia is a university town whose cobbled centre houses medieval art, steep streets and shops selling locally made chocolate. It also hosts a jazz festival, while the annual Festival of the Two Worlds is in Spoleto, a town with a hilltop castle and well-preserved Roman theatre.

Remains of a Roman theatre are also in walled Gubbio, one of Italy’s best-preserved medieval towns. North-east, Città di Castello has excellent galleries and a church visible for miles around. The same is true of the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi, dedicated to the saint who lived in poverty. Ironically, this hillside town has one of the few 5-star Umbria hotels.

Foligno has a peaceful river and further south Terni is near the multi-level Marmore waterfalls. Orvieto on a sheer escarpment to the north-west houses the jewel in the Umbrian crown – a fantastic cathedral with a gold-mosaic façade.

To the north, jutting into Lake Trasimeno on a piece of land that was once an island, is Castiglione del Lago. In the east, tranquil Norcia in the foothills of the Monti Sibillini National Park houses some of the many Umbria hotels in the countryside on Booking.com.

Absolutely exceptional stay at Tenuta San Masseo – an unforgettable experience from start to finish. The accommodation is nothing short of spectacular – elegant, beautifully maintained, and designed with both comfort and style in mind. The views of Assisi are simply breathtaking – waking up to the majestic sight of the Basilica and the rolling Umbrian hills felt like a dream. What truly set our stay apart was the peace and tranquility of the property. It’s the perfect escape to unwind and recharge. Every corner of the estate is serene, thoughtfully curated, and radiates a sense of calm. But what made our experience truly outstanding was the incredible team at Tenuta. Every single person went above and beyond to ensure our stay was perfect – warm, attentive, and genuinely passionate about creating a memorable guest experience. We felt truly cared for. We cannot recommend Tenuta San Masseo enough – a hidden gem that we can’t wait to return to. Five stars and then some!

Domus Pacis Assisi is very well located near the train station and it is very convenient for travelling by trains. It is upgraded and very, very clean. For those who cannot eat suggary breakfast, there is a possibility with toasts and cheese which is more than expected in majority of places in Italy. Air condition is perfect, not too cold, not too warm and without a windy air. Perfect for 38 degree in the summer 2024!!! I recommend it for All.

An amazing place.

An amazing place. One has to be there to appreciate this surreal Franciscan town. There were lots of tourists when we were there but there are plenty of tranquil and peaceful places away from the crowds. We really enjoyed our dinners at 2 local restaurants. Small bars in the alleys offer good food and wines and perfect for people-watching.

Terni is a wonderful city.

Terni is a wonderful city. In my opinion it's a hidden gem of Italy. It's an easy 1-hour train ride from Rome, and on the way to all the northern Italian cities. Terni Centro has almost no cars, so incredibly walking friendly, full of cafes, gelaterias, and pizza. All, with picture book old Italian architecture. Also, Terni really comes alive after 4pm!

This is an incredibly beautiful town with sweeping views of Umbria. Well located in terms of visiting the surrounding villages and Perugia. There are very fine restaurants, as well as terrific mom and pop options, year round. Be sure to see the art and the artifacts in the museum, just off the main piazza. According to Frances Mayes (author of Under the Tuscan Sun), the collection could rival anything in Italy. Lastly, don't forget to savor the Sagrantino!
