Fukuoka City offers a lot for travellers who like the city feel, but not necessarily how crowded Tokyo is. There’s many cultural sites within Fukuoka and surrounds if that’s what you like as well. Fukuoka, (Hakata) is a lot less crowded than Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto. There is a ferry terminal where you can ride a ferry to Busan, S. Korea if you like. The Shinkansen train station is in the central part of town making transportation very easy and the subway system is not insane to use like Tokyo.
