The are several apartments with private onsen and some with view over the mountain side. A very tasty and rich breakfast (Japanese or western) is available in the main building. Great Restaurants and a cafe with delicious cake and views are nearby. But the most lovely point was this: In Japan you usually meet many respectful, friendly people. However, the staff in Spa Greenness was extraordinary. Already the information exchange when planning details weeks before our arrival was both cordial and professional. On location everybody was helpful and friendly, be it for a special breakfast or very helpful to book a ferry for the next travel section. It's a spa town with a lot of history and a very energetic red-light district. Lots of money being invested in new tall buildings in the centre of the business district that don't quite jive with the otherwise laid-back (if you'll pardon the expression) atmosphere of the town. Morning walk along the waterway when there were not many tourists was peaceful and enjoyable. The are lots of small shops on the main street, but might be too crowded to enjoy. Not a great deal to do or see in Oita. The castle ruins holds some interest. A very friendly man in a temporary office in the car park helpfully explained more about the castle and it's moats. Onta Yaki Pottery Village was a terrific day trip, although we did have to take a long taxi ride to get there. I loved this town and could easily live here. I was lucky enough to catch Ukai (cormorant fishing on the Mikuma River while enjoying a dinner cruise). It has a laid-back vibe, with some excellent dining options close to the station. The 7 hells was the reason we went to Beppu and they were interesting but I'm not 100% sure it was worth travelling specifically for. Better to have it as a day trip from Fukuoka. If you do go, don't go to the 'Crocodile' one, I'm no expert in Crocodile health, but those poor things really did not look in very good condition. We went to Yufuin and Beppu, Yufuin by the touristy train (book a month earlier and reserve your seats!), then we took the bus from Yufuin to Beppu and did the onsen tours on our own by bus.
