By far my best stay in Japan. Good quality appliances and huge apartment. The host was extremely quick and pleasant. The view is amazing. And it is a great non tourist starting point to the art islands around.

The view, the quiet, the ambience were all really nice. The decor was great. The staff waited past their closing time for us to check-in, which was kind of them. The bluetooth speaker was great.

What a find this hotel is-set in a lovely picturesque quiet village of Yoshida- the hotel which comprises nine floors has only got 16 accommodation units, each is like a mini apartment with stunning views. The staff could not have been more helpful they went out of their way to make our visit memorable.. My wife and I are both vegetarian and they made a real effort to cook a special breakfast for us every morning and a beautiful evening meal. I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough.

This was truly one of the most beautiful houses I've ever stayed in. Every detail was gorgeous and even better than the pictures online. The location was great-- just on the edge of town so it was quiet and peaceful, but close enough to stores and restaurants. We could hardly force ourselves to leave, and hope to go back soon.

Just an incredible place to stay in Tonosho. Beautiful house with some amazing George Nakashima furniture. The food was excellent and the place is both in a great location and spotlessly clean. But the hosts made the trip incredible. I was injured in an accident and they bent over backwards to help me and my family. 10/10

Nestled amidst the picturesque landscapes of Shodoshima Island, 西の家 provided our family with an enchanting retreat. Its convenient location, just a stone's throw from Olive Park, offered easy access to tranquil strolls amidst verdant greenery. Upon entering the property, we were immediately captivated by the meticulously manicured garden, a testament to the owners' unwavering dedication to preserving the beauty of 西の家. Stepping into our spacious traditional tatami room, we were transported into a realm of cultural immersion, where the essence of Japanese hospitality seamlessly blended with modern conveniences. The room was not only aesthetically pleasing but also impeccably clean, ensuring a comfortable and hygienic stay. The epitome of Japanese hospitality, the hosts at 西の家 went above and beyond to make our stay truly exceptional. Their prompt and informative responses to our inquiries, even before our arrival, set the stage for an unforgettable experience. They even helped us to book a delectable dinner at a nearby restaurant, introducing us to the culinary delights of Shodoshima. Their genuine warmth and attentiveness made us feel like cherished guests rather than mere visitors. Knowing they lived nearby provided an added layer of comfort, as we were assured of their assistance if needed. The harmonious blend of tranquility, cultural immersion, and convenient access to local attractions like Olive Park made 西の家 a haven for those seeking respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. We cherished every moment spent amidst the serene surroundings, creating memories that will forever be etched in our hearts. Eager to return to this haven of tranquility, I wholeheartedly recommend 西の家 to anyone seeking an authentic and unforgettable travel experience.

Transport wasn't ideal at this time of year but if you timed the buses right you could see a lot of Shodoshima island in a few days. It was great being surrounded by olive and orange groves. It had a very Mediterranean feel to it. From my resort I only had to cross the road to Olive Park and it's many attractions. A lovely coffee shop, aptly called Dilly Dally, was only a few doors away. I visited the site of the movie "24 eyes", Angel Road, Olive Park and strolled along various beaches. A lovely place to wind down after Tokyo. I mainly cooked for myself but found a coffee shop that did lovely gluten free muffins near Angel Road.

The area is great for cycling, kayaking, hiking or art hunting. Be prepared to deal with racist, xenophobic locals. The ferry ticket counter and information people look at you with disgust and hate, even if you can speak Japanese. They just plain hate you and don't want you there. Despite Bennesse's efforts to run those Triennales art festivals, the locals either don't get along with this foundation (I've heard from museum employees that they're underpaid and overworked, and the benefit packages are laughable) or they just plain don't like outsiders. Some hotels where you will be treated like a human being, despite your gaijin statu,s are Ohkido and L&M Pension in Tonosho. The rest, even some luxury hotels, can be really hit and miss. This time they were sold out, so I stayed at Yo Ko Resthouse in Tonosho, which was terrible. The owner bad mouthed her Taiwanese and American guests and constantly complained that there were "too many guests" and she's tired of them. She lied about luggage storage and assistance with receiving & sending luggage with Yamato delivery services. Her resthouse has a high score because she lies to guests and portrays herself as this poor, overworked auntie who just needs your sympathy. Then, as soon as her Taiwanese and Singaporean female guests went up to their room, she'd turn to the people at the bar and start gossiping about them: who had a fight with her boyfriend, who's a gold-digger, etc. It was uncomfortable and nasty, and I got the feeling that she needs the money, but she's envious and resentful of her customers.

Nice visit to the soya sauce production.

Nice visit to the soya sauce production. We also visited the olive tree park. In all places we visited people were very welcoming. We could have visited other areas of the island. People are kind and helpful (even when they hardly speak English). Transportation is reliable and connection well planned between buses and boats. Highly recommended!
