Tanabe

Koyasan
Located in the sacred Mount Koya area, 高野山 宿坊 桜池院 -Koyasan Shukubo Yochiin- is a historic temple and an accommodation for visitors. Just to the left of entering sanmon gate, there is a stone garden created by the famous Mirei Shigemori and designated a natural monument by the Japanese government. The evening meditation, sutra writing, and morning prayer service, were amazing. Talking with the monks was very interesting; about the temple, Buddhism, and their personal experiences. The dinner and breakfast were also great.

Hongu
The traditional rooms at Yunominesou Ryokan have sliding paper screens, floor cushions and Japanese futon bedding on a tatami (woven-straw) floor. Guests can relax in the Yukata robe or watch the LCD TV. All rooms include a toilet, an electric kettle and a fridge. Spectacular service, very clean, excellent Japanese meals with full explanations for foreign guests, very quiet traditional rooms with modern public areas, traditional Onsen (our room had its own toilet but bathing is public in separate male and female baths (this might seem like a big deal to some but we embraced it as rare opportunity to experience a traditional Japanese Ryokan. Stayed here 2 nights to complete the Hongu loop of the Kumano Kodo in one day (traveling to and from the property is possible using reliable and inexpensive public transportation; it will take a day to get there from Tokyo and another day to return). The staff speak excellent English and I can’t say enough about their professionalism and care for their guest’s comfort.

It was very pleasant to stay here. The staff was super friendly, the room was cozy and the futon was very comfortable. The private onsen was amazing. The closeness to the train station is very convenient.
Koyasan
Located in the sacred Koyasan area, Saizenin offers simple accommodation surrounded by mountains and many temples. Originally developed as a lodging for the temples’ pilgrims, it conducts Buddhist services every morning that guests can attend. Nankai Koyasan Train Station is a 15-minute drive away. The ryokan is amazing. You immediately feel at peace and relaxed walking through the corridors on the way to your room. We found our room to be very generously spaced, with comfy beds, a great shower and bathroom. Saizenin is located right across the temple complex of Koya-san, which contains the picturesque pagoda among other beautiful buildings. Other attractions and museums are very close by, at walking distance, except for perhaps the cementery which is on the other side of the village, but if you walk 10 minutes down the street, there is a bus that leaves you right there, so it wasn't an issue for us. The building itself is in a traditional Japanese style, and of course being in Koya-san means that it is surrounded by forest, with hills to one side, and the street and temple to the other. Its courtyard is also beautiful, the entire thing feels like a museum even though it is actually the place where you are staying at :) Bottom line, staying at Saizenin is an amazing experience. The (vegan) food is unlike anything I've had before, delicious and unique. Every day, there is a meal at around 17:00, and breakfast is at 7:30 I believe, after the morning prayer. Speaking of which, going to the morning prayer in the temple is a must. The monks chant for about half an hour, and along with the beautiful interior of the space, it is a great meditation experience.

Stayed in the Luxury Suite with garden view as part of a joint honeymoon/birthday treat and wow, what an experience! The suite was absolutely stunning, the food was beautifully presented and getting to experience the meditation and fire ritual made this a unique stay, and one we will both treasure for years to come.
Giovanni and Yutaka are lovely kind people, we have never met more hospitality. You feel completely at home, but then with the most delicious dinner and breakfast. What a talented cooks both Giovanni and Yutaka are. What a nice place to stay. Although most travellers choose to stay only one night during the Kumado Kodo hike, we highly recommend staying more nights to relax and enjoy the beautifull place, food, goats and hospitality.
The staff, firstly. A bit of a language barrier but so helpful. The guesthouse is just lovely. You get a real rustic feel. Extra padded mattresses too. There is an onsen on site and, you can book to have a traditional Japanese breakfast too. Be sure to visit the owner’s restaurant next door. The tuna is epic! We enjoyed 2 nights here to see Nachi Katsuura waterfall and we loved the sleepy town. You’ll have a relaxed stay here.
I really enjoyed the one night I had there as a chance to feel relaxed in a lovely traditional Japanese home. Tanabe seemed like a cool town too. The owner pointed out some good dinner options which didn't disappoint either!
Lovely staff, welcoming and eager to help, providing excellent service. The hotel has a romantic old-timer vibe, yet the facilities are in good condition. The outdoor bath was beautiful in the morning with the fresh sea breeze and outstanding view, and the breakfast was exceptional. Would stay again!
Beautiful atmosphere - very relaxing. Great room, Lovely mat house. Nice garden.
The hotel is near to the beach, it has a lovely swimming pool outside. There is a great viewing area on the 11th floor where you can sit and relax looking out to the sea and on the same floor there are male and female Onsens. There was a wide variety of food at breakfast. The room with tatami area was very nice. Good size gym and laundry room.
Really magical experience. The monks are lovely, food is great and the meditation relaxing. We’d come here again in a heart beat. Incredibly good English spoken too!
great location to relax after your first day on the trail and very friendly host. after staying in cities, this place is a refreshing change a pace, overlooking rice fields without anything going on around you (other than some lovely fireflies buzzing around in the evening). would stay again
The owners were very warm and friendly , the couple offered home made dinner and breakfast for us. On the last day of our stay , they even provided a lovely Japanese lunch box for our long day hiking. We had to leave very early that day and they woke up at 5 ish in the morning to prepare the breakfast and lunch box. We were also honoured to celebrate their 4-year anniversary on one evening with sake and a big feast. All the best to Kohei san and his family🙏
