FAQs about hotels in Christchurch

Stunning Natural Beauty at Your Doorstep

Dusting itself off from a series of recent earthquakes is the seriously stunning New Zealand city of Christchurch. While its old English buildings like ChristChurch Cathedral are being rebuilt, the magnificent Botanic Gardens and Hagley Park sustain its reputation as the Garden City.

Located along the Avon River, NZ’s 2nd-largest city has Victoria Square at its centre. Surrounding highlights include the Canterbury Museum and the Gothic-style Arts Centre. Sumner Beach is a favourite location for locals when the sun shines.

Out towards the spectacular harbour town of Lyttelton is the Christchurch Gondola ride where you can enjoy a sweeping view of the city.

The South Island’s capital is a good starting-off point for extreme sports such as bungee jumping and white-water rafting. The majestic Southern Alps surround the city and offer world-class ski resorts such as Methven, at the foot of Mt. Hutt.

A large selection of motels and hotels are available on Booking.com, including in the vicinity around Christchurch International Airport.

I was based in Hornby for my 3-day stay. The motel I used was perfectly placed for everything I needed to do, next to a lovely park and with easy access to restaurants and the Hub mall facilities for shopping. I wish I'd had a bit more time to explore how the city centre has changed since I was last there, but not this trip.

I spent 4 months in NZ and for various reasons and at different times, stayed about 9 nights/days in Christchurch, alone and also with my husband. We loved the vibe of the city. It felt a happy place, offering everything a city has to offer but in an intimate way. It felt safe, clean and it was lovely to see families enjoying the public bbqs and spaces. Lots of greenery and parks. A place that felt traditional yet new. Great places to eat, drink and watch the world go by. Really loved this place and I am not a city person! Riccarton House and gardens was a highlight. There are plenty of places around to explore for day trips too and the second hand bookshops in Ferry Road area are the least expensive I have come across in NZ! Could definitely keep going back there, even just for the hospitality and genuine friendliness of the locals.

Our visit was shorter than we would of liked but I fully recommend the International Antarctic Centre - children loved it and we could of stayed longer, informational, fun, interactive and lots to do, husky puppy was gorgeous and Matua who greeted us was informative and korero was refreshing. The cafe was great and again even the children found food they liked. We went to Build-a-Bear to create a keepsake of our trip and that was a fun activity - Mall was open to 9pm so we were able to pop down and not rush. The Outlet Store for new Crocs - a must for Croc addicted children. Christchurch Tram Tour - Is a must-do. (We have done this tour previously and were disappointed to not be able to go this visit) Christchurch Library (Tūranga) - Interactive and fun, friendly people. We had hired a Campervan to travel in and there was a lot of areas that you could park a Camper so that was great for us to pull over and walk around. We didn't do as much sightseeing as we would have liked but we have decided to book again for a few more days there as we spent more time in Dunedin then we expected. We did miss going to Cookie Time as traffic was horrendous so that needs to be planned better for our next time down there.

A great city to get around. Plenty of eating places & things to do especially with the lovely weather and all the Autumn trees. We only had half a day in Christchurch (arrived at night, then flew out at 5pm next day) but even that was too much time to spend here! I wouldn't want to come back again. There wasn't anything interesting to see or do, apart from the "Quake City" exhibit which was good. Walked thru the botanic gardens and around the "city centre" but it was pretty much a ghost town, with hardly any people or tourists around and not really any good shops. We kept Googling for things to do, but ended up just sitting in the cafe at a Mitre 10 hardware store to fill in time til we had to go to the airport. I guess this city is more of a base for flying into (more flights than Queenstown) and for exploring further away sites.

Stunning heritage venue with a superb location in central Christchurch CBD. Close to all town venues, attractions, and amenities including public bus transport. Beautiful high ceilings and split-level rooms stay warm and comfortable in winter and are quake-proofed. Mostly high quality (albeit older) appliances for self-contained living, and Sky TV included. Fast cleaning upon request, and great sun block-out curtains. Excellent in-house gym, pool, and sauna amenities. Friendly staff. Less than half the price of the hotel in the same building.

We ended our coach tour at The Distinction Hotel, Cathedral Square. And wishing to stay on in Christchurch we found Quest Apartments on the www. The apartment had all that we needed and was very good value. We didn't need a car and we could walk around the square and visit the library, walk to the Botanic Gardens, and the shops, the bus station The location was perfect. We could prepare our own breakfast, morning/afternoon tea and ate our lunch/dinner out.

All we wanted was a room close to the hotel to sleep for the night. This hotel was just what we needed. Clean, simple and a decent cost. The bonus was the common room downstairs where we ate our meal. Our flight was really early in the morning and it was less than 10 minutes for us to walk to the airport so we didn't have to rely on transportation. We stayed here when we landed in Christchurch and also before out departure.

This is a small, clean hotel not far (about 15-20 minutes walk) from the centre of Christchurch. The room itself wasn't big, but we didn't spend much time there, so that didn't matter. Despite being just outside the city centre, it was a pleasant walk there, and it's also close to Hagley Park. There are also good eating and drinking places close by if you don't want to go into the city centre.

Designer Cottage was a great value for Christchurch! The room was super cute and cozy. I loved the garden and outdoor table. There are lots of food options nearby. Breakfast was nice and the owner was very accommodating to my special dietary needs (gluten free and dairy free). He also provided plug adapters when mine stopped working and arranged for my early morning taxi to the airport.

Tidy, you get what you paid for, cheap. Showers good presure, unit spacious, pets ok. Close to shops.
